Impossible Cards - First Attempts

After reading Allard's latest blog post about some incredible (and completely impossible) cut and folded playing cards, I was inspired to give this a go for myself. And as luck would have it, I've had nothing to do this evening...

So here are the results of my first few attempts that I will share here:






I won't say anything about these because the pictures really are enough. Try to consider how each of these were made, and then give it a go for yourself!

Please do send me pictures if you come up with a clever design for me to try and solve.

I'm really enjoying making these, so watch this space as hopefully I'll be able to come up with some interesting designs of my own. Until then I'm going to keep practicing on designs like these by Allen Rolfs, Angus Lavery and Ian Rowland.

      Thank you! And not nearly as difficult as it looks. Just make the cuts, then the puzzle is working out how to fold them without tearing them. Great fun!

    Allard's blog got me thinking about this, too. I could 3D-print flat sheets like these using plastic, but it would lose much of its charm. And it wouldn't exploit the capabilities of the printing process to accomplish anything new.

    And THAT gives me a new idea: perhaps I can devise a new style in which the layers are manufactured with contours that inherently overlap (something cards couldn't do) but require puzzle-solving to become intertwined.

      I was thinking that a good set of plastic cards would be an advantage and allow even finer cuts/shapes. I have a couple of bicycle plastic cards that are super flexible and pretty robust.

    These are so nice and looking so fun in making of these cards. In how many time you have make the 1st one design?

      I've only made one of each of the designs, and they probably haven't taken more than 10-15 minutes each. The cutting part is easy, it's just the folding that is difficult.
